Car Washing, Drying or Waxing

Washing a car by hand is a surface-following problem on a curved, reflective, wet object. The worker runs a mitt in straight lines, rinses from the top down, dries with a towel they keep flipping to a clean side, and buffs wax in overlapping circles until the haze is gone. The feedback is visual and subtle, and water on a dark panel hides a lot.

Shifts include pre-rinse with a pressure wand, two-bucket wash, wheel and tire scrubbing with separate brushes, blow-drying door jambs, clay bar work, and applying paste or spray wax by hand or with an orbital polisher. Workers constantly adjust pressure and angle to avoid scratching.

We capture the worker's view through a head camera, with fixed cameras around the bay to show the whole body and the car. The streams are time-aligned. Recording takes place across full working days at hand-wash sites and detail shops in five countries. No one appears in this data without having agreed to it and been paid, and the license covers commercial training.
